Kanjin Terms of Service
Last Updated: June 24, 2026
Questions? kanjincafe@gmail.com
Welcome to Kanjin. These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of Kanjin, including our website at kanjincafe.com, any Kanjin-operated subdomains, our web application, lessons, reviews, kanji, radicals, vocabulary, decks, pathways, study tools, subscriptions, account features, and related services.
Kanjin is operated by Kanjin LLC, a Wisconsin limited liability company based in the United States (“Kanjin,” “we,” “us,” or “our”).
By creating an account, accessing Kanjin, purchasing a subscription, or using our services, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree to these Terms, do not use Kanjin.
Questions, privacy requests, refund requests, billing questions, support requests, or other requests may be sent to kanjincafe@gmail.com or submitted through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use Kanjin.
Kanjin is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly allow children under 13 to create accounts or submit personal information. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we may delete the account and related information.
Kanjin may require users to complete an age gate during account creation by entering birth month, day, and year. This information is used to determine whether the user is eligible to create an account and may be stored in the user account record to maintain eligibility records and enforce age-related requirements.
If the age gate indicates that a user is under 13, Kanjin will not allow account creation.
If you are under the age of majority in your location, you may use Kanjin only with the permission and supervision of a parent or legal guardian.
2. Your Account
You may need an account to use Kanjin. You agree to provide accurate information and keep your account information up to date.
First and last name are required during account creation and may be changed in account settings but not fully removed while your account remains active.
You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure and for all activity that occurs under your account. You may not share your account with another person or allow another person to use your login.
If you believe your account has been accessed without permission, contact us at kanjincafe@gmail.com or through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com.
We may refuse, suspend, restrict, or terminate accounts that violate these Terms, create risk for Kanjin or other users, misuse the service, fail to pay required fees, or violate applicable law.
3. Kanjin’s Learning Service
Kanjin is a Japanese learning service focused on kanji, radicals, vocabulary, readings, meanings, spaced repetition, review scheduling, mastery stages, decks, pathways, and related study tools.
Kanjin may include features such as:
- JLPT pathways;
- textbook-aligned kanji decks;
- custom decks;
- mastery-based progression;
- automatic vocabulary;
- advanced start;
- weak item practice;
- item detail pages;
- user notes;
- user synonyms;
- study statistics;
- account settings;
- subscription features.
We may add, remove, modify, rename, reorganize, or discontinue features over time.
4. Educational Content and Accuracy
Kanjin is an educational tool. We work to provide accurate and useful Japanese learning content, but we do not guarantee that every meaning, reading, example, explanation, priority choice, deck placement, or study recommendation will be perfect, complete, current, or suitable for every learner.
Kanjin may use dictionaries, public language references, word frequency information, example sentence sources, internal formulas, curated rules, and manual review to help prioritize kanji meanings, readings, vocabulary, and learning content.
Kanjin may use AI-assisted or automated tools internally to help evaluate the commonality, frequency, priority, or suitability of words, meanings, readings, examples, or learning items. These tools assist content preparation.
Kanjin does not use AI-generated mnemonics or AI-generated explanations as final published learning content unless we clearly state otherwise. Kanjin learning items are manually reviewed and edited by our team before publication to the best of our ability.
Kanjin does not claim ownership over the Japanese language, public-domain language facts, common kanji meanings, readings, or vocabulary that exist independently of Kanjin. Kanjin does own or license its original selection, organization, prioritization, interface, explanations, study system, data structure, design, software, and presentation.
If you find an incorrect meaning, reading, example, deck placement, or other content issue, you may report it through Kanjin’s Error Report feature, the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com, or direct email to kanjincafe@gmail.com.
5. Third-Party Language Resources
Kanjin may reference, incorporate, adapt, compare against, or derive information from public, open, licensed, or third-party Japanese language resources, including dictionary data, kanji data, kanji decomposition data, example sentence data, frequency or priority information, textbook alignment information, and other language-learning references.
Kanjin may use resources such as JMdict English common-word subset data, KANJIDIC2 data, KRADFILE data, Tatoeba Japanese-English sentence data, manually written contexts, generated context drafts, and curated internal rules reviewed for Kanjin.
Third-party resources, names, datasets, copyrights, trademarks, and licenses remain the property of their respective owners. Kanjin’s use of a third-party resource does not mean that Kanjin is affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or approved by that third party unless we expressly state otherwise.
Where required by applicable licenses, Kanjin will provide attribution, acknowledgments, license notices, or source information in the service, documentation, footer, Sources & Acknowledgments page, item detail pages, or another reasonable location.
6. Textbook-Aligned Decks
At launch, Kanjin supports textbook-aligned kanji decks for Genki 1, Genki 2, Quartet 1, and Quartet 2.
These textbook-aligned decks are designed to help learners study kanji in an order that corresponds to those curricula. Unless we clearly state otherwise, Kanjin does not reproduce textbook lesson text, textbook example sentences, textbook translations, textbook exercises, textbook explanations, or other proprietary textbook content.
Textbook names may be used to describe compatibility, organization, or study alignment. Kanjin is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or approved by the publishers of Genki, Quartet, or any other textbook unless expressly stated.
You are responsible for obtaining any textbooks or third-party learning materials you choose to use with Kanjin.
Kanjin may add, rename, remove, or modify textbook-aligned decks over time.
7. User Content
Kanjin may allow you to create, save, submit, or manage content, including custom decks, notes, synonyms, feedback, bug reports, support messages, contact form submissions, and other materials (“User Content”).
You retain ownership of your User Content. By creating, saving, or submitting User Content through Kanjin, you grant Kanjin a limited, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to host, store, process, copy, display, modify for technical formatting, back up, and use your User Content as needed to operate, provide, secure, support, and improve Kanjin.
This license does not give Kanjin the right to sell your private User Content as a standalone product.
You are responsible for your User Content. You agree that you will not submit User Content that is unlawful, harmful, abusive, hateful, harassing, defamatory, fraudulent, infringing, obscene, deceptive, malicious, or otherwise inappropriate.
8. Feedback, Error Reports, and Content Reports
Users may report errors, bugs, content issues, or support issues through Kanjin’s Error Report feature, the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com, or direct email to kanjincafe@gmail.com.
If you submit ideas, suggestions, corrections, bug reports, feature requests, content reports, or other feedback to Kanjin, you grant Kanjin a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use, copy, modify, publish, implement, and otherwise exploit that feedback for any purpose without compensation to you.
This does not give Kanjin ownership of your private User Content, and Kanjin’s use of personal information remains subject to the Privacy Policy.
Reports may relate to kanji, radicals, vocabulary, readings, meanings, example sentences, deck placement, pathway placement, study behavior, account issues, technical issues, billing issues, or other parts of Kanjin.
Reports submitted through the Error Report feature may include a screenshot or visual snapshot of the current page and related action context. Please avoid submitting reports from pages that display sensitive personal information unless necessary.
Reports may be reviewed by Kanjin administrators or authorized personnel. Kanjin may use internal validation, moderation, prioritization, or reputation signals to help evaluate reports, identify reliable reports, prevent abuse, and improve content quality.
9. Custom Decks and Future Sharing
Custom decks are currently private. Kanjin does not currently offer public deck sharing, public profiles, public study statistics, leaderboards, comments, following, or other public-sharing features.
If Kanjin later offers deck sharing, public profiles, public study statistics, leaderboards, comments, following, or other public-sharing features, we may update these Terms and our Privacy Policy, and additional rules may apply. You will be responsible for any custom deck or other content you choose to share or publish. You must have the rights to share any content included in a public or shared custom deck.
We may remove, restrict, moderate, or disable access to shared content that violates these Terms, infringes intellectual property rights, creates legal risk, misleads users, contains inappropriate content, or harms Kanjin or other users.
10. Kanjin Intellectual Property
Kanjin and its software, design, interface, branding, graphics, study system, lesson structure, databases, content organization, explanations, original text, and related materials are owned by Kanjin LLC or licensed to Kanjin LLC.
Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Kanjin for personal learning purposes.
You may not:
- copy, sell, sublicense, or redistribute Kanjin content or software;
- scrape, bulk export, harvest, or systematically extract Kanjin data;
- reverse engineer or attempt to extract source code;
- bypass paywalls, access controls, subscription restrictions, or rate limits;
- use Kanjin content to create a competing product, dataset, or service;
- use automated tools to abuse, overload, or access Kanjin without permission;
- remove copyright, trademark, or proprietary notices;
- copy Kanjin’s visual design, interface, branding, or trade dress without permission.
All rights not expressly granted are reserved.
11. No Public API
Kanjin does not currently offer a public API. You may not access Kanjin through unauthorized scripts, bots, scrapers, automated clients, reverse-engineered endpoints, or other unauthorized technical methods.
We may block, throttle, suspend, or terminate accounts or traffic that we believe is automated, abusive, excessive, unauthorized, or harmful to the service.
12. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use Kanjin to:
- violate any law or regulation;
- infringe another person’s intellectual property, privacy, or publicity rights;
- access another person’s account;
- interfere with or disrupt Kanjin’s systems;
- upload malware, harmful code, or security exploits;
- scrape, harvest, or bulk download content without permission;
- abuse contact, support, billing, or reporting tools;
- impersonate another person or entity;
- submit false, misleading, unlawful, or harmful content;
- attempt to bypass subscription restrictions;
- resell or commercially exploit Kanjin without written permission;
- use Kanjin in a way that harms Kanjin, other users, or third parties.
We may enforce these rules at our discretion to protect Kanjin, our users, and our service.
13. Copyright and Intellectual Property Complaints
If you believe content on Kanjin infringes your copyright or other intellectual property rights, contact us at kanjincafe@gmail.com or through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com with enough information for us to review the issue.
Your notice should include:
- your name and contact information;
- identification of the work you believe has been infringed;
- identification of the Kanjin content you believe is infringing;
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized;
- a statement that the information you provide is accurate;
- your physical or electronic signature.
We may remove or restrict content that we believe may infringe intellectual property rights. We may also suspend or terminate accounts that repeatedly infringe or violate these Terms.
14. Free and Paid Plans
Kanjin may offer a Free plan and paid Scholar plans, including monthly, yearly, and lifetime access options.
The features available under each plan may change over time. We may add, remove, rename, or modify features, provided that we make reasonable efforts to preserve the core value of paid access.
Some features may require a paid plan. If your subscription ends, you may lose access to paid features, but your account and study progress may remain available according to these Terms and our Privacy Policy.
15. Billing and Payment
Kanjin uses Stripe as its payment processor. By purchasing a paid plan, you authorize Kanjin and Stripe to charge your selected payment method for applicable fees, taxes, renewals, and other charges associated with your plan.
Monthly and yearly subscriptions are billed in advance and renew automatically unless canceled before the renewal date.
By purchasing a recurring plan, you authorize Kanjin and Stripe to charge your payment method for the billing interval, price, taxes, and renewal terms shown at checkout or in the billing portal.
You are responsible for keeping your payment information current. If a payment fails, we may suspend, downgrade, restrict, or remove access to paid Scholar features until payment is successfully completed.
If a recurring payment fails, is disputed, is reversed, or remains past due, Kanjin may suspend, downgrade, restrict, or remove access to paid Scholar features until payment is resolved. Your account may remain available at the free access level unless otherwise restricted under these Terms.
Prices may change. Scholar prices may change for future purchases, new subscriptions, resubscriptions, or plan changes. Existing active subscriptions are governed by the price, billing interval, and renewal terms shown in Stripe, checkout, or the billing portal unless Kanjin provides notice of a change as required by law or as reasonably appropriate.
You are responsible for any taxes, fees, or charges associated with your use of Kanjin, except for taxes based on Kanjin’s income.
16. Pre-Signup Checkout
Kanjin may allow you to purchase a paid plan before creating or completing an account. If you purchase before signup, your paid access must be claimed by creating an account using the same email address used at checkout.
Kanjin may link paid access by matching the authenticated user’s email address with Stripe billing records associated with that same email address. If you create an account using a different email address than the one used at checkout, paid access may not attach automatically.
If you complete payment but cannot claim access, contact Kanjin at kanjincafe@gmail.com or through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com. We may need to verify your payment, email address, Stripe checkout session, Stripe customer record, or other billing information before granting access or resolving the issue.
Purchasing before signup does not waive the requirement to agree to these Terms, acknowledge the Privacy Policy, and satisfy Kanjin’s eligibility requirements.
17. Cancellations, Downgrades, and Refunds
You may cancel your subscription through your account settings, the Stripe billing portal, or another method provided by Kanjin.
If you cancel a monthly or yearly subscription, you will generally keep paid access until the end of the current billing period. After that, your account will move to the available free access level unless you resubscribe.
Monthly subscription payments are refundable only if requested within 7 days of the initial monthly purchase. Yearly and lifetime purchases are refundable only if requested within 30 days of the initial yearly or lifetime purchase.
Refund eligibility applies only to the user’s first purchase of that plan type. Users who cancel, resubscribe, repurchase, or purchase again after receiving or becoming eligible for a refund are not entitled to an additional refund for the same plan type unless required by law.
Renewal payments, unused time, forgotten cancellations, partially used billing periods, accidental purchases, changes in study activity, and changes in feature usage are not refundable unless required by law or unless Kanjin decides otherwise in its sole discretion.
Downgrades generally take effect at the end of the current billing period unless Kanjin or Stripe indicates otherwise. Upgrades may take effect immediately.
To request a refund, contact Kanjin at kanjincafe@gmail.com or submit a request through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com. Refund requests must be received within the applicable refund window.
If you believe there has been a billing error, contact Kanjin at kanjincafe@gmail.com or through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com.
18. Additional Consumer Rights
Nothing in these Terms limits any consumer rights, withdrawal rights, cancellation rights, refund rights, warranty rights, or other rights that cannot be waived under the laws that apply to you.
If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, or another jurisdiction with mandatory consumer protection laws, you may have additional rights that apply regardless of Kanjin’s refund policy.
19. Lifetime Access
If you purchase lifetime access, “lifetime” means access to the applicable Scholar features for the lifetime of the Kanjin service.
Lifetime access does not mean access for the lifetime of the purchaser, and it does not guarantee that Kanjin will operate forever. Lifetime access also does not include every future product, separately sold service, add-on, third-party integration, or feature unless we expressly include it.
Kanjin may modify, rename, reorganize, replace, or discontinue features over time, but we will make reasonable efforts to preserve the core Scholar access associated with lifetime purchases while the Kanjin service operates.
If Kanjin discontinues the service, sunsets Scholar, or materially shuts down paid access, lifetime access will end when the Kanjin service ends. Kanjin may provide notice, export options, transition options, refunds, credits, or other remedies where required by law or where Kanjin chooses to do so, but lifetime access does not guarantee that Kanjin will operate forever.
Unless required by law, lifetime purchases are refundable only as described in the Cancellations, Downgrades, and Refunds section.
20. Account Deletion
You may start account deletion from Settings. For security, account deletion may require email verification and an in-app confirmation step.
When account deletion is confirmed, Kanjin will attempt to cancel any active Stripe subscription connected to your account and clear active billing fields from your Kanjin user record.
Account deletion may not be completed instantly. Some deletion steps may require additional processing or manual administrative review, including authentication cleanup, subscription verification, billing-record handling, fraud-prevention checks, or service-provider processing.
Deleting your Kanjin account may not delete historical billing, invoice, tax, payment, fraud-prevention, or transaction records maintained by Stripe or retained by Kanjin where reasonably necessary for legal, tax, accounting, dispute-resolution, or compliance purposes.
Deleted accounts may not be recoverable.
21. Communications
Kanjin may send you transactional emails related to your account, authentication, billing, subscription, payment status, security, support, policy updates, service notices, and email-change confirmations.
Kanjin does not currently send marketing or promotional emails. If Kanjin later sends marketing or promotional emails, we will update our practices as needed and provide any required opt-out method.
22. Third-Party Services
Kanjin uses third-party service providers to operate the service, including providers for hosting, database, authentication, payment processing, deployment, analytics, email delivery, and related infrastructure.
Your use of payment features is also subject to Stripe’s applicable terms and privacy policy.
Kanjin is not responsible for third-party websites, services, products, or policies that we do not control.
23. Availability and Changes to Kanjin
We may update, modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of Kanjin at any time. We may also experience downtime, maintenance, errors, data delays, or service interruptions.
We are not responsible for service interruptions, delays, data loss, or feature changes except where required by law.
24. Disclaimer of Warranties
Kanjin is provided “as is” and “as available.”
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Kanjin LLC disclaims all warranties, express, implied, or statutory, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, accuracy, availability, reliability, uninterrupted operation, and error-free operation.
We do not guarantee that Kanjin will meet your expectations, produce any specific learning result, help you pass any test, or be free from errors.
25. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Kanjin LLC and its owners, employees, contractors, service providers, and affiliates will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, including lost profits, lost data, lost goodwill, service interruption, learning disruption, or loss of access.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Kanjin LLC’s total liability for any claim related to Kanjin will not exceed the amount you paid to Kanjin in the three months before the event giving rise to the claim, or $100, whichever is greater.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations of liability, so some of these limitations may not apply to you.
26. Indemnification
You agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Kanjin LLC and its owners, employees, contractors, service providers, and affiliates from and against claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising from or related to:
- your use of Kanjin;
- your User Content;
- your feedback;
- your violation of these Terms;
- your violation of law;
- your violation of another person’s rights;
- your misuse of Kanjin’s services or content.
27. Termination by Kanjin
We may suspend, restrict, or terminate your account or access to Kanjin at any time if we believe you violated these Terms, failed to pay required fees, created risk for Kanjin, misused the service, or harmed another user or third party.
We may also remove or restrict User Content that violates these Terms or creates legal, security, or operational risk.
28. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we may notify you by email, in-app notice, or another reasonable method.
The updated Terms will be effective when posted unless a later effective date is stated. Your continued use of Kanjin after updated Terms become effective means you accept the updated Terms.
29. Governing Law and Venue
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wisconsin, without regard to conflict of law principles.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, you and Kanjin LLC agree that any dispute arising from or relating to these Terms or Kanjin will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Wisconsin, and you consent to the personal jurisdiction of those courts.
30. Miscellaneous
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, Sources & Acknowledgments page, and any additional terms we provide for specific features, form the entire agreement between you and Kanjin regarding the service.
If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the remaining parts will remain in effect.
Our failure to enforce a provision does not waive our right to enforce it later.
You may not assign these Terms without our permission. Kanjin may assign these Terms as part of a merger, acquisition, reorganization, sale of assets, or by operation of law.
31. Contact
Questions about these Terms may be sent to:
Kanjin LLC Email: kanjincafe@gmail.com
You may also submit questions, refund requests, billing questions, support requests, or other requests through the Contact Us form on kanjincafe.com.
